Karen Ikegami (she/her/hers)

Karen believes that learning is most meaningful when it is embedded in a meaningful context. She has spent the past 11 years ensuring that students have access to great teachers and curriculum and plans to do no different at RiseUp, where she is excited to be a part of the innovative team. She grew up in the Northwest and attended the University of Oregon, then earned her masters at Seattle University. She moved to Colorado in 2008 and worked at Eagle Rock School and Professional Development Center as the Math Instructional Specialist. Aside from her work in schools, Karen spends her free time rock climbing, playing tennis, gardening, and floating rivers.

What is Your Why?

I believe that all students can achieve great things when they are known well. When I was in high school, I felt isolated and alienated from my teachers, and so I don’t think I was able to really excel. Because of this, it’s important to me that we take the time to get to know each student as an individual and that they feel a true sense of belonging.
