English Instructor

Laura Jones is an English teacher at RiseUp. She holds a B.A. in Humanities from the University of Colorado and a Ph.D. in English from Louisiana State University, and most recently worked as an English language arts specialist at the University of Michigan. As a teacher, she is passionate about supporting students to recognize their own brilliance as language users and culture builders, to draw on their strengths in order to confront obstacles and achieve goals, and to imagine and work toward a society that recognizes, nurtures, and celebrates all of its members. Over the past 20 years, Laura’s work in education has included teaching high school and college, recruiting and training new teachers, writing curriculum, and coaching teacher educators. She grew up in Colorado and recently returned home after living in New Orleans, Brooklyn and the San Francisco Bay Area. She loves old movies, long road trips, music of all kinds, swimming in nature, taking art classes, and, of course, reading (or listening) to great books.
