For more than a decade, Mile High Youth Corps (MHYC) and Denver Public Schools partnered to provide GED classes for youth participating in the Corps. In recent years, MHYC wanted to offer diplomas and to open their doors to more youth. As a result, RiseUp Community School was created.
Students can apply for MHYC’s YouthBuild program, and if accepted, receive a unique opportunity to gain paid work experience and earn an AmeriCorps Education Award while they attend school. Students spend half their time in the classroom and half their time on a construction job site learning technical skills. Once they complete the program, they can use their AmeriCorps award toward their post-secondary education.
Based on a successful program in California, RiseUp Community School offers an effective school model for re-engaging young people to achieve their academic goals. RiseUp’s campus will be based at 1801 Federal Blvd. in Denver.
